911 Task Force

The 9-1-1 Task Force was formed by the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) in the late 1980's after the Texas Legislature enacted a statute requiring 9-1-1 service in every city and county in Texas. The Task Force is comprised of representatives from each of the ten counties in the CAPCOG region who have expertise in assignment of addresses, database maintenance, mapping, and working in a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). In addition, the task force will have one representative from the CAPCOG Executive Committee as a voting member, and one from the Commission on State Emergency Services (CSEC) as a non-voting member.

Members of the Task Force meet quarterly to discuss issues and projects in the 9-1-1 arena. From the discussion, recommendations are made to the Executive Committee for things such as purchase of new equipment, policies and procedures, contracts and overall direction of the 9-1-1 service in the Region.

Each member of the Task Force is responsible for updating the PSAPs in their Counties regarding new technology, equipment, policy or general information discussed during the meetings. They also bring issues forward to the group on behalf of the PSAPs for discussion and input. Often another agency has experienced the same issue and has already solved that problem.

Often Task Force members volunteer to participate in work groups for specific issues, such as the bi-annual budget and Strategic Plan, developing specifications for equipment or software for the region, legislative issues, etc. The work group then reports back to the full Task Force who will vote to recommend or not recommend action to the Executive Committee.

Each January, the Task Force elects a Chairman and a Vice Chairman. The Chairman works with CAPCOG staff to set the meeting agendas and presides over the meetings.

9-1-1 Task Force meetings are held quarterly on the fourth Wednesday of the first month of the quarter at 10:00 am in the CAPCOG Boardroom.
